How We Make the Pour Overs

How We Make the Pour Overs

A Better Cup Starts Here.

Ever wonder how we make our pour overs here at Ignite Coffee Company?

One of the things we love most about coffee is that you don't need an expensive machine to make an incredible cup at home. With a few simple tools, good coffee, and a little patience, you can brew something pretty special.

Today, we're sharing the exact pour-over recipe we use here at Ignite so you can give it a try at home.

What You'll Need

  • 25 grams of freshly ground coffee (about 5 level tablespoons, depending on the coffee and grind)

  • 400 grams of water (approximately 13.5 fl oz)

  • A pour-over dripper and paper filter

  • A kettle

  • A scale and timer (recommended)

Step 1: Get Everything Ready

Start by weighing out 25 grams of coffee and grinding it to a medium-fine consistency, slightly finer than your typical drip coffee grind.

Heat your water to 205°F.

Place your paper filter into your pour-over dripper and rinse it with hot water. This helps remove any papery taste while also warming up your brewing equipment.

Dump out the rinse water, place your dripper and brewing vessel on the scale, and tare it to zero.

Add your freshly ground coffee, then tare your scale one more time.

Now we're ready to brew!

Step 2: The Bloom (0:00–0:30)

Start your timer and slowly pour 50–60 grams of water over the coffee, making sure all the grounds are saturated.

Let the coffee bloom for 30 seconds.

This allows trapped gases to escape from freshly roasted coffee and helps prepare the grounds for a more even extraction.

Step 3: The Second Pour

After 30 seconds, begin your second pour.

Using small, gentle circles, slowly add another 150 grams of water.

Try to keep your pour steady and controlled, working from the center outward without pouring directly onto the paper filter.

Allow the water to flow through the coffee before moving on to your final pour.

Step 4: The Final Pour

For your final pour, slowly add the remaining water until you've reached 400 grams total.

Aim to finish pouring around the 2:00–2:20 mark.

From there, let the remaining water drain through the coffee bed.

Your total brew time should be around 3 minutes.

And that's it!

A Few Tips From Our Roastery

If your coffee tastes too bitter, try grinding a little coarser. If it tastes sour or weak, try grinding slightly finer.

Don't worry if your first attempt isn't perfect. Making great coffee is about experimenting, learning, and finding what tastes best to you.

And if you don't have a scale at home, you can still give this recipe a try. Use approximately 5 level tablespoons of ground coffee and 1⅔ cups of water. It won't be quite as precise, but it's a great starting point.

Great Coffee Starts With Great Beans.

Whether you're brewing at home or stopping by our shop in Oceanside, we believe every cup should be worth slowing down for.

If you're ready to try this recipe, grab a bag of freshly roasted Ignite coffee and give it a shot.
